Amyr Rocha Lima Discusses Retirement Planning on AJ Bell’s Money & Markets Podcast

After spending decades building your retirement savings, how do you learn to enjoy the money you've accumulated?

This was one of the central questions explored when our Managing Director, Amyr Rocha Lima, joined Hannah Williford on AJ Bell's Money & Markets podcast, published on 23 October 2026.

The conversation followed the publication of Amyr's new book, Enough for What? How to turn your money into a retirement worth living, and explored why preparing for retirement involves much more than pensions, investment returns and tax-efficient withdrawal strategies.

For many people, saving for retirement becomes a lifelong habit. They spend 30 or 40 years making regular contributions, investing prudently and resisting the temptation to dip into their savings.

Then, almost overnight, retirement arrives and the purpose of that money changes.

As Amyr explained during the conversation, this transition from accumulating wealth to spending it can be psychologically challenging. People who have spent their adult lives being disciplined savers may find it surprisingly uncomfortable to start drawing on the money they have accumulated.

Financial planning can help people make that transition by connecting their financial resources to the things they genuinely want to achieve.

One of the questions Amyr encourages people to ask is deceptively simple: What does an ordinary Tuesday in retirement look like?

Beyond holidays and special occasions, how would you like to spend your days? Where would you live? Who would you spend time with? What activities would give you a sense of purpose and enjoyment?

Understanding these preferences provides a starting point for establishing what retirement might cost and how to structure a financial plan to support it.

This approach is central to the philosophy behind Enough for What?, which encourages readers to move beyond asking whether they have accumulated enough money and consider what they actually want that money to make possible.

During the interview, Hannah and Amyr also discussed the need to balance two competing concerns.

The first is familiar: the possibility of running out of money during retirement, particularly as people live longer and potentially face increasing care costs.

The second receives less attention: reaching your 80s or 90s with substantial savings remaining, having been unnecessarily cautious during the earlier years when you had the health, energy and opportunity to enjoy them.

Both deserve consideration.

A comprehensive retirement plan needs to assess financial sustainability, account for uncertainty and help people make informed spending decisions throughout their later lives.

Amyr also introduced listeners to several practical exercises from his book, including the Retirement Autopilot Test, which encourages people to reflect on their hopes, concerns and assumptions about retirement.

For couples, he discussed a 'Mine, Yours and Ours' approach, recognising that even partners who have shared a life together may have quite different expectations about retirement.

The conversation also explored the importance of looking beyond financial security to consider other aspects of retirement wellbeing, including health, relationships, usefulness and joy.

These themes reflect our belief at Strategic Wealth Partners that good financial planning starts with understanding the individual and the life they want to lead.

Investment portfolios, pensions, tax planning and withdrawal strategies remain essential components. Their purpose, however, is to help people make the choices that are important to them.

We would like to thank Hannah Williford for an engaging and thoughtful discussion, alongside Sarah Coles, Danni Hewson and the wider AJ Bell team for inviting Amyr to contribute to the podcast.

The episode, Could Musk merge SpaceX and Tesla?, was published on 23 October 2026, with Amyr's conversation beginning at approximately 50 minutes and 22 seconds.

Amyr's book, Enough for What? How to turn your money into a retirement worth living, was published on 7 October 2026 and explores how to give retirement savings a purpose, make thoughtful financial decisions and build a retirement that reflects your own priorities.

At Strategic Wealth Partners, we believe the most valuable retirement planning conversations often begin with a question that goes beyond the numbers:
